Since the advent of those wonderful little shiny discs we call DVDs, one of the most anticipated releases has been the Back to the Future trilogy, and now – finally – the long wait is over.

Chronicling the exploits of Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and his seemingly bonkers (but not) professor friend Dr Emmet Brown as they bounce all around time from the 1800s to the 2000s, Robert Zemeckis’ trio of films have justifiably become regarded as modern day classics. Combining a perfect blend of comedy, adventure, suspense, action and even a touch of romance, they even break the filmic rule of threes – as rather than suffering the petering out effect most sequels manage, they’re all utterly fantastic films in their own right, and are all absolutely stuffed to bursting point with enthralling entertainment value. Film buffs can spend ages simply looking out for the many obvious and not-so-obvious references to other classic movies, however this is just icing on an already decidedly yummy cake, as those just out for a good time are still served up way more than enough to satiate them.

This has turned into a rather unashamed rave, so to find out more about the individual films just click on the links below, and rest assured, if you have somehow managed to avoid the charms of these three films to date, then taking the plunge now that they’re available for us to view at home in the manner in which they were intended will surely not disappoint.

All three films are presented in their original 1.85:1 ratio and are anamorphically enhanced. They've all been given absolutely sensational sprucing ups, with them all coming up as if they were made yesterday and without a visual intruder in sight.

While the films' original Dolby Stereo mixes aren't on offer, the Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 audio tracks we're given could surely leave nobody upset at the decision, adding wonderful depth, extra life and general oomph that we could previously have but dreamed of.

There's much talk that overseas releases, once they eventuate, are set to include more bonus features than our region 4 release. As it stands, however, we're presented with a pretty satisfying selection, with Laurent Bouzereau's superb trilogy of documentaries making for essential viewing just for starters. Add to this extensive photo galleries, a commentary of sorts on the first film, deleted scenes, outtakes and various other assorted bits and pieces and any fan should be well chuffed with what's presented.

Yes, we've waited a long time for this release - and for a change it's such a delight to realise that sometimes, no matter how high our expectations were, they can actually be exceeded. This is top shelf stuff, and an absolute necessity for both fans of the trilogy and any lovers of engaging and genuinely entertaining mainstream cinema.
